What’s the light therapy good for?

Since my last guide about how to choose the right light therapy device, I got many questions about the benefits I’ve experienced with the light therapy.

The list of research-backed benefits of the light therapy is long and extremely versatile, including accelerated recovery from TBI, pain reduction, reduction of heart attack, improved metabolic conditions like diabetes, improved sexual function and fertility, accelerated stem cell mobilization from the bone marrow.

Here, I’ll just cover a few that I’ve experienced personally, after using MitoMAX for a few months.

· Skin rejuvenation. This was my primary motivation for purchasing my light therapy panel. My first article of the light therapy lists a few of well-researched areas of benefits for the skin. Multiple studies show that the light therapy (often referred as LLLT, Low-level Light Therapy or more recently, PBM, photobiomodulation) reduces wrinkles and fine lines, photodamages, acne scars, and age spots [1]. Exposure to the red and near-infrared wavelengths can also increase skin firmness, improve the skin texture, and accelerate wound healing.

After a few months of daily PBM, I can confirm many of these benefits personally. Most notably, hyperpigmentation caused by photodamage became significantly reduced. I used to have multiple dark spots (ca 0.7 mm in diameter) on my right check, and now they are barely visible. Equally notable is the improved skin texture and firmness; The skin under my eyes was a little sunken and had a dark shadow. Already after a few weeks’ of PBM, they started to visibly improve.

· Hair regrowth. Multiple studies show that LLLT appears effective to treat male-pattern alopecia [2] [3]. PBM seems to assist with regrowth of the hair also in women [4]. I can anecdotally attest to PBM’s hair regrowth effect, as after a few months’ of PBM, I see more thin baby hairs on the hairline, where I used to have less hair.

· Improved gut health. A fascinating 2019 paper of “photobiomics” shows that PBM can alter the gut microbiome in beneficial way, both in mice and human [5]. After only 14 days of near-infrared (808 nm) laser treatment on their bellies, the microbiota of the treated mice showed 10,000-fold increase in the bacterium Allocaculum, known to be beneficial both in mice and humans. The paper also mentions a study by the authors showing that PBM increased bacteria species Akkermansia muciniphila and Bifidobacterium sp. in human subjects. Joel Greene’s fascinating book the Immune Code explains in detail the weight-loss benefits of these two bacteria species. Again anecdotally, I can share that PBM seems to have made my gut healthier; Regardless of what I eat, I experience less crumps and gassiness in the stomach than before.

· Improved brain and cognition. Another fascinating 2019 study [6] found that PBM with a near-infrared wavelength (810 nm) applied intranasally and intracranially can modulate the oscillations of the brainwaves, altering the power of all brainwaves. Also, a study shows that intracranial PBM improved executive cognitive functions in patients with Alzheimer, after just 4 weeks [7].

As my previous guide explains, PBM can require investing regularly a significant amount of time (20+ minutes). In my effort to maximize the ROI, I always stack PBM with meditation; As a part of my meditative practice, I preferred to include tapping practice that allows my eyes to be open, because I want to monitor my HRV with Lief. The tapping practice involves soft tapping of acupoints and is shown to significantly lower cortisol and improve the HRV. The PBM and tapping stack is one of the most reliable ways I’ve found so far to raise my HRV without a failure.
